The depiction of the intangible space of the mind has become the essence of my work. The mind can take us to secret spaces of imagination and memory. These are the places we first go to in our childhoods, creating and exploring our own worlds of make-believe, secret places and hideaways.
Using traditional casting and mould making techniques, I aim to make physical the concept of the world inside us. Rather than recreating specific spaces, I want to evoke feelings of childhood excitement, amazement and an intrepid exploration of imaginary worlds.
Playing with the conventions of the standard plinth, the flat planes and crisp edges of the sculptures give the illusion of large pieces of solid stone or marble, and contain deep organic spaces left behind by familiar objects. These mysterious inside spaces have become a metaphor for the mind and its unseen world.
